How to choose the right paint finish for your space
Matt, satin or gloss changes how a colour reads and how well the wall survives daily life. A room-by-room guide.

Finish is the decision people give least thought to and regret most often. It changes how a colour reads, how the wall survives being touched, and how visible every imperfection in the plaster becomes.
Matt
Matt scatters light instead of reflecting it, which flattens out uneven surfaces. That makes it the right answer for ceilings and for older walls that have been filled and patched over the years.
The trade-off is durability. Matt is the least forgiving of scrubbing, so it belongs where hands do not land.
If a wall gets touched daily — a hallway, a stairwell, anywhere with children — matt will show it within months.
Satin
The middle ground, and the most broadly useful finish in a Nigerian home. It wipes clean, holds its colour under strong light, and does not throw glare across the room the way gloss does.
Gloss
Hard-wearing and genuinely washable, which is why it belongs on doors, frames, skirting and metalwork rather than on large walls. On a big flat surface it highlights every ripple.
